Job Summary
The HSE Officer will be responsible for implementing, monitoring and improving the Company’s health, safety and environmental systems across its hard-rock and alluvial mining operations. The role will ensure compliance with applicable Ghanaian mining, occupational health, environmental and safety requirements and promote a strong safety culture across mine sites, processing areas, workshops, camps and other operational facilities.
Core Duties
- Implement and monitor the Company’s HSE policies, procedures, standards and programmes.
- Conduct regular inspections and risk assessments across hard-rock and alluvial mining operations.
- Monitor compliance with approved mine plans, environmental management plans and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Identify workplace hazards and recommend appropriate corrective and preventive measures.
- Monitor safety controls for drilling, blasting, excavation, loading, hauling, crushing, screening, processing and other hard-rock activities.
- Monitor hazards associated with alluvial mining, including excavation, water bodies, pumps, dredging or other material-handling and processing activities.
- Conduct regular inspections of heavy mining equipment, workshops, fuel storage areas, processing plants, tailings facilities, haul roads and other operational areas.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and environmental events and prepare appropriate reports.
- Coordinate toolbox meetings, safety briefings, inductions and HSE training for employees and contractors.
- Monitor the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and enforce site safety requirements.
- Support emergency preparedness, emergency response drills and implementation of site emergency response procedures.
- Monitor environmental controls relating to water quality, dust, noise, waste management, land disturbance, erosion and rehabilitation.
- Monitor the handling, storage and use of fuels, explosives, chemicals and other hazardous materials.
- Support environmental monitoring and reclamation/rehabilitation activities in accordance with approved plans.
- Maintain HSE records, inspection reports, incident registers, training records and compliance documentation.
- Liaise with relevant government agencies, regulators, contractors and other stakeholders on HSE matters when required.
- Assist management in identifying HSE risks associated with new projects, equipment, processes and mine development activities.
- Recommend measures to reduce occupational injuries, environmental impacts and operational risks.
- Promote continuous improvement in HSE performance throughout the Company's mining operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Mining Engineering, Geology or a related discipline.
- Professional qualification or recognised certification in Health and Safety, Environmental Management or a related field will be an advantage.
- Minimum 3-5 years’ relevant experience, preferably within a mining or other heavy industrial environment.
- Experience in large-scale mining, particularly open-pit, hard-rock and/or alluvial operations, will be an advantage.
- Good knowledge of Ghana’s mining, occupational health, environmental and workplace safety requirements.
- Practical knowledge of risk assessment, incident investigation, emergency response and workplace inspections.
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring, waste management, water management and mine-site rehabilitation.
- Experience working with mining contractors and heavy equipment operations will be an advantage.
- Strong report-writing, communication and training skills.
- Ability to work in challenging field conditions and maintain a high level of attention to detail.
